Those that are not able to use the stairs safely are at an increased risk of a fall. Falling on the stairs is very common and often results in a serious injury. This risk increases with age, as does the likelihood of a serious injury. This is the reason that many individuals use stair lifts.

A stair lift is a device that carries a person up and down the stairway safely and securely. Most do so using a chair, but some instead use a small platform called a perch. Lifts that use a perch require that the user remains standing as they are carried up the stairs. This can be a little dangerous and requires a strong center of balance, so they should only be used by people who can not use a regular stair chair for medical reasons.

Stair lifts are either battery powered or use electric power. Both plug directly into the wall, but the battery powered unit actually moves using a battery. The advantage to these types of lifts is that they will still work if the power goes out. There is an increased cost associated with these types of lifts, both in maintenance and in the initial cost of the lift.

Those that use stair lifts are able to confidently use the stairs safely and without the need of having someone there to help. They greatly improve safety and for straight staircases provide an affordable alternative to an elevator.
